Sigma launches 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM superzoom for DSLRs

New Thermally Stable Composite material offers wide range of photography in compact, stabilized, macro lens

Ronkonkoma, NY, June 15, 2012 - Sigma Corporation of America, a leading researcher, developer, manufacturer and service provider of some of the world's most impressive lines of lenses, cameras and flashes, is pleased to announce the availability of its new Sigma 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM lens starting in July 2012. Pricing is still pending.

The addition of the 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM speaks to Sigma's versatile product lineup with this multipurpose zoom lens that offers Optical Stabilization (OS)* and covers wide angle to telephoto to macro photography. It differs from Sigma's current 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM lens with its even more compact size, its macro capability with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.9 and the use of Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material currently used only by Sigma.

TSC, which is incorporated into the lens barrel and is often compared to polycarbonate, has a high degree of elasticity and exhibits little variation in its structure in extreme temperature conditions. This means that internal barrel expansion and contraction due to extreme temperature variations is less prevalent. TSC also contributes to the lens' size reduction. The non-macro 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 without TSC weighs 22.2 ounces and is 3.1 by 4 inches in diameter, whereas the new macro lens is 16.6 ounces and 2.9 by 3.5 inches in diameter.

"We're constantly trying to improve and expand our lens lineup, and this addition is no exception," said Mark Amir-Hamzeh, president of Sigma Corporation of America. "By redesigning the lens and adding TSC, we are able to offer this very compact, feature-rich lens that is flexible enough to tackle a range of photography, including landscape, sport and macro. This is key for the everyday photographer who wants to travel light but pack the punch of a complete camera bag."

Sigma optimized this lens' power arrangement by incorporating double-sided aspherical lenses and reexamining the design to achieve a more compact filter diameter. The lens has an approximate 13x high zoom ratio with a filter size of 2.8 inches in diameter. Sigma's unique OS system, as well as one Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass and three aspherical lens glasses, compensate for camera shake and enable correction of color aberration, respectively.

The new 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM lens is also equipped with Super Multi-Layer Coating to reduce flare and ghosting, a Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) to ensure fast and quiet auto-focusing, and a rounded, seven-blade diaphragm to create an attractive round blur to the out of focus areas. The lens features a brass-made bayonet mount applied on the surface to reinforce strength for long-term use and enable high accuracy and solidity.

This lens will be available in Sigma, Sony, Nikon, Canon and Pentax mounts, starting with Canon mounts coming in July, 2012. Pricing and all availability for other mounts have yet to be announced.

*Sony and Pentax mounts are not incorporated with OS function.

Schneider Kreuznach plans lens range for mirrorless and shows 14mm F2.0

With sales at prior-year levels, Schneider Kreuznach records increase in profit. Industrial business shows high potential. New product range for system cameras in pipeline. Positive outlook for current year.

BAD KREUZNACH, June 14, 2012.

Jos. Schneider Optische Werke GmbH based in Bad Kreuznach, Germany, and its subsidiaries have recorded an increase in operating results by around 14 %. Total sales of 85.5 million euros in 2011 were roughly at prior-year level. Continual growth at the company's Bad Kreuznach headquarters contributed 51.7 million euros to Group sales, up 6 percent versus the prior-year period. "We have been making major investments at the Bad Kreuznach location and are pleased to see that the headquarters has recorded further growth," said Schneider Group's managing director Dr. Josef Staub.

Particularly the growing demand in the Automotive sector for highprecision test and measurement technology plus the overall Inspection market, for instance in the field of LCD and solar production, account for significant increases in the Industrial segment which the company expects to show continuing growth potential. The simple compact cameras business on the other hand is declining. "This does not come as a surprise. We are placing a strong focus on the innovative market for mirrorless system cameras with their interchangeable lenses and have appropriate developments in the pipeline," Dr. Staub added. Schneider- Kreuznach will launch the first lens of an all-new range of mirrorless system cameras this fall. To develop and produce these high-end lenses the company is planning additional capital expenditures at the Bad Kreuznach location. In the wide range of the Consumer market, the group has already been active with B+W filters. In addition, the portfolio was enhanced by lens attachments for Apple's iPhone last year.

The NIKKOR 18-300mm VR Lens: Nikon’s Longest Focal Range

Building on the popularity and versatility of Nikon’s telephoto zoom lens lineup which includes both the NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 and 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 VR lenses, the new 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens is Nikon’s longest focal range ever, with an astounding 16.7X ultrahigh-ratio zoom range. The DX-format 18-300mm VR lens is surprisingly compact, lightweight and covers a focal range from wide-angle 18mm to super-telephoto 300mm, equivalent to a focal length of 27mm to 450mm in FX/35mm format. At the 300mm focal length setting, the lens’ large f/5.6 aperture enables photographers to shoot at faster shutter speeds with shallow depth-of-field. This new super telephoto zoom lens is ideal for taking stills when travelling and for all around general photography including landscapes, portraits and distant subjects. The 18-300mm lens is also excellent for recording HD video as it can be used for wide establishing shots, medium close-up shots and extreme telephoto sequences when the users want to separate the subject from the background.

The construction of the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens consists of 19 optical elements in 14 groups with three Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass elements that effectively minimize chromatic aberration, even at the widest aperture settings, and three aspherical lens elements that virtually eliminate aberrations at wide aperture settings. The new lens also incorporates a nine rounded blade diaphragm to help achieve a natural looking dramatic separation between subject and background.

The AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR also has a dedicated zoom lock switch which secures the lens barrel at its minimum length and will prevent the lens from sliding during transportation. Additionally, the 18-300mm VR lens is ideal for capturing close-ups with great detail, as it offers a 1.48 ft. minimum focusing distance at 300mm, as well as a maximum reproduction ratio of 1:3.2X.

The NIKKOR 24-85mm VR Lens: The Standard Zoom for FX Shooters

Ideal for photographers seeking an FX-format compatible standard zoom lens, the new AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR lens delivers sharp, crisp and high-quality images and can be assigned as an everyday walkabout lens. Covering the frequently used focal-length range of 24mm to 85mm, this lens is a great companion for any FX-format shooter and is ideal for shooting stills of landscapes, architecture, head and shoulder portraits, candid shots or group shots. For HD video shooters, the 24-85mm VR lens is a natural choice when filming landscapes, large groups of people or when wide field establishing shots or medium close-ups are needed. The 24-85mm lens is a great everyday lens that is compact, lightweight and easy to carry on any photo assignment or family adventure.

In addition to the lens’ built-in Vibration Reduction (VR) technology, the AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR lens features Auto Tripod detection which recognizes when the camera is mounted on a tripod, even during HD video recording, to help deliver specialized VR correction. The lens construction of the 24-85mm VR lens consists of 16 optical elements in 11 groups with one Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass element, three aspherical lens elements and a seven rounded blade diaphragm.

Canon creates EF-S 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS STM and EF 40mm F2.8 STM

London, UK, 8 June 2012 – Canon today unveils two new compact, lightweight lenses - the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM and EF 40mm f/2.8 STM. Showcasing a number of new features, including continuous autofocus in Movie mode, both models offer superior image quality and enhanced flexibility to enable photographers of all skill levels to capture both stills and movies of practically any subject.

Fast, accurate autofocus for film-makers and photographers

As well as offering full-time manual focus controls when shooting stills, the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM and EF 40mm f/2.8 STM are both also ideal for aspiring movie makers, allowing them to focus more accurately during shooting. The perfect companion lenses to the new EOS 650D, both models feature new stepper motor technology (STM), enabling fast, continuous focus when recording moving subjects - ensuring movies will be smoother and clearer than ever before.

Offering enhanced AF performance with high-speed, high-precision focusing, the two new lenses make it easy for photographers to capture more spontaneous shots, with exceptional detail and clarity. This is particularly useful for documentary, action or travel photography. With a minimum focusing distance of 0.39m and 0.3m respectively, the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM and EF 40mm f/2.8 STM allow you to get even closer to the action whilst keeping the subject in perfect focus.

EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM – versatile, high-performance zoom

Offering a focal range of 18–135mm, the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM has been created to offer photographers a compact, versatile zoom lens which can be used to capture a variety of subjects, from portraits to landscapes and action shots. Ensuring high-quality stills at slow shutter speeds, the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM features an intelligent optical Image Stabilizer which offers a 4-stop advantage over non-IS models. The lens will also sense whether the photographer is shooting normally or panning, engaging the most appropriate IS mode to capture the best possible image. When shooting movies, Dynamic IS automatically engages, countering any shake caused by the videographer's movement to produce smooth, stable footage.

For subtle background blur when exploring shallow depths of field in stills and movies, the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM features a circular aperture with an Electro Magnetic Diaphragm (EMD) which permits highly-accurate control over aperture settings. High image quality is also assured throughout the zoom range thanks to four groups of lens elements including one Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) and one Precision Molded Optics (PMo) element to counter chromatic aberration. Canon's optimised Super spectra coatings on each lens element also reduce ghosting and flare, ensuring images require minimal post-processing.

EF 40mm f/2.8 STM – super-slim, high image quality

The EF 40mm f/2.8 STM is Canon's first EF pancake lens with a fixed focal length of 40mm and wide f/2.8 aperture, making it ideal for photographers who want a versatile, compact and lightweight lens for portrait, reportage, travel or landscape situations. Precision control over the circular, seven-blade aperture is enabled by the EMD, producing a beautiful bokeh effect and an aspheric lens with Super spectra coatings ensures optimal image quality from the centre of the lens to the periphery for stunning shots of practically any subject.

“The Compact Zoom CZ.2 70-200/T2.9 is first in a line of zoom lenses designed for the owner- operator from Carl Zeiss that allows them to be used with a wide variety of current and future cameras, because of their compact design, full- frame coverage and interchangeable mounts”, notes Christian Bannert, Senior Director R&D, Carl Zeiss Camera Lens Division. “There has never been a zoom lens on the market with similar features."

The Compact Zoom CZ.2 lens is a perfect complement to the smaller, lighter HD video and cine cameras introduced in the last year. Especially when used with Steadicam systems, the weight of the lens and camera becomes a critical factor. Weighing only 2.8kg (6.2lbs), it opens up new creative opportunities for action sequences by allowing the camera to be used hand-held for a greater range of motion.

The Compact Zoom CZ.2 lenses feature an 18-blade aperture, which creates a round iris opening and a natural, out of focus rendition. As with the rest of the Compact Prime CP.2 family, the cine-style housing with gearing allows the attachment of any standard follow-focus system. By using the interchangeable mounts for PL, EF, F, MFT and E, the Compact Zoom CZ.2 lens can be easily adapted to numerous camera systems and ensures compatibility with future cameras as technology changes. The Carl Zeiss T* anti- reflection coating ensures the maximum contrast and color rendition by minimizing stray light and ghosting within the lens. The Compact Zoom CZ.2 delivers flare-free results and it has no focus shift over the whole zoom range.

More compact zoom lenses also made in Germany with additional focal lengths will be announced during the course of this year.

The Compact Zoom CZ.2 70-200/T2.9 will start shipping in the fourth quarter of 2012 at a recommended retail price of €14,900 or US$19,900 (excluding VAT)*.

Carl Zeiss adds 15mm T/2.9 and 135 T/2.1 Compact Prime cine lenses at NAB

Carl Zeiss is expanding its Compact Prime CP.2 product range with 15mm and 135mm lenses

OBERKOCHEN/Germany, 05.04.2012.
During the NAB Trade Show in Las Vegas from April 16-19, 2012, Carl Zeiss will present two new cine prime lenses. Carl Zeiss is expanding its product range of the Compact Prime CP.2 series with two compact and uncommonly lightweight lenses. With new focal lengths of 15mm and 135mm, filmmakers can enhance their portfolios with these remarkable lenses.

The new focal lengths allow professionals to realize creative ideas by expanding the angle-of-view-coverage of the Compact Prime CP.2 series from super wide through telephoto. Thanks to interchangeable mount system, the lenses can be attached to all standard HDSLR models, as well as on professional PL-mount cine and HD video cameras, providing the highest possible versatility. One of the key features of the Compact Prime CP.2 lenses is the full-frame coverage on 36x24 sensors. In this way, the complete angle of view is fully employed and the lenses will remain compatible with future cameras employing this sensor size.

"The two new focal lengths round out our existing range of nine lenses between 18mm and 100mm at both ends of the spectrum”, says Michael Schiehlen, Sales Director of the Carl Zeiss Camera Lens Division. “We have expanded our product range with the two new focal lengths in accordance with our customer feedback and in the course of working with photographers and filmmakers. We can therefore offer professionals greater possibilities for their creative process and through a variety of different focal lengths and related accessories, provide everything they need."

Compact Prime CP.2 lenses are ideally used on film sets for shooting in small, confined spaces. Especially with the Compact Prime CP.2 15/T2.9 the images appear more natural and can be realized without distortion of the image and editing tricks. Thanks to the cine-style housing, all current, standardized follow focus systems can be attached to the Compact Prime CP.2 lenses. The long standard focus rotation of 300° and smooth focus resistance provide excellent control for accurate follow focusing, especially with the shallow depth-of-field found with the large sensor cameras. The 14-blade aperture of all Compact Prime CP.2 lenses creates a round iris opening, resulting in a smooth and natural transition to the out of focus areas.

The Compact Prime CP.2 15/T2.9 super wide angle lens provides a broad field of coverage and is perfect for use in confined spaces or to provide dramatic panoramas to help set the scene. Distortion is extremely well controlled and horizontal and vertical lines are accurately captured in architectural settings. The Compact Prime CP.2 15/T2.9 incorporates two aspheric lenses and special types of glass material with abnormal partial dispersion to provide an extraordinary correction of chromatic aberration. Even on cameras with full-frame sensors, the image remains razor sharp out to the edges and details are recorded in the highest resolution. On cameras with smaller sensors the new Compact Prime CP.2 15/T2.9 lens also provides a super wide angle of view. The Compact Prime CP.2 15/T2.9 weighs only 900 grams (1.98lbs).

The Compact Prime CP.2 135/T2.1 lens is the longest lens ever added to the Compact Prime CP.2 product line. With its focal length of 135mm and the shallow depth-of-field that comes from using a telephoto, the cameraman can maintain a relatively long distance from the subject while also isolating the subject from the background area. This is especially important for scenes in which the main characters are the main focus and the camera needs to capture expansive movement throughout the scene. Due to the working distance and the long focal length, the captured image looks very natural. At 1.6kg (3.52lbs), the 135mm lens is very lightweight for this product class, and yet, as with all Compact Prime CP.2 lenses, it is sturdy and suited for use in rugged filming environments.

“For several years now the trend is towards the use of HDSLR and HD video cameras with accompanying accessories on the set, especially for independent filmmakers, as well as for blockbuster productions. The quality of the filming is approaching a level that just a few years ago was only attainable with professional movie cameras in a much higher price class,” explains Schiehlen. Carl Zeiss offers lenses for every budget – from SLR lenses up to professional cine lenses.

Another key advantage of the entire Compact Prime CP.2 series is the availability of inter- changeable mounts for PL, EF, F, MFT and E. The mounts can be dismantled easily interchanged by the owner using the instructions provided on the Carl Zeiss website (http://www.zeiss.com/cine/cp2). This broad range of all major mounts offers filmmakers greater flexibility in the choice of choice of cameras depending on their budget of the needs of the project. Filmmakers also benefit from interchangeable mounts when upgrading to other equipment classes, helping to protect their investment from the inevitable changes in digital technology. For example, as independent film- makers expand their repertoire after their initial success, they can continue to use Compact Prime CP.2 camera lenses thanks to the interchange- able mounts. Filmmakers can continue to use the professional lenses they are already familiar with, regardless of the mount type required by the camera and avoid the costs for expensive new lenses.

The Compact Prime CP.2 lenses are color-matched throughout the series and can be mixed and matched without correcting for changes in post. The lenses are available for purchase individually or as part of a custom lens set at additional savings. An extensive range of accessories consists of lens cases, test chart, interchangeable mount sets, as well as adjustment shims are available. The lenses are compatible with camera rigs and follow-focus systems from most major suppliers.

The Compact Prime CP.2 15/T2.9 and Compact Prime CP.2 135/T2.1 will start shipping in the fourth quarter of 2012. The recommended retail price of each lens is €4,200 or US$5,700 (excluding VAT)*.
